Selma Hepp: Chief Economist of Trulia
Professional Bio: Selma serves as Trulia’s Chief Economist. Previously, she was a senior economist at the California Association of REALTORS® and as an economist and manager of public policy and homeownership at the National Association of REALTORS®. She has also worked as a research associate at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education. Currently, Selma collaborates with the University of Southern California’s Lusk Center for Real Estate and the REALTOR® University Center for Real Estate Studies.
What I do at Trulia: Selma leads Trulia’s housing economics research team and is focused on providing house hunters with key insights about the economy, housing trends and public policy.
Why it’s interesting: Finding a home is a messy and overwhelming process that hinges on making tradeoffs among price, space and location. As Trulia’s Chief Economist, Selma helps people navigate their home search by translating complex economic trends and housing policies into plain English – ultimately helping house hunters make smart real estate decisions.
Story Ideas: Selma can provide expert commentary on what’s happening with the housing market nationally and locally. She can provide context on how wider economic trends and policy decisions will impact home prices, sales, and new construction. Other topics that Selma can discuss include housing affordability and inequality, and can also provide advice for people searching for a new home.
Education/credentials: Selma earned her Master of Arts in Economics from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning and Design from the University of Maryland.
Compelling personal tidbits: Selma recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area from Los Angeles with her dog, Gunner – an Australian shepherd and Border collie mix. She loves salsa dancing, Latin jazz, hiking, and good food and wine.
