Boston National Meeting and Installation Recap by Rosanna Garcia

December 22, 2018 by Fiona Theseira 1 Comment

This year’s National meeting in Boston was stellar.  Not only did we have the usual great education sessions and speakers, but we as California members, were proud to see our own Heather Ozur installed as the National President. We ran/walked a 5K for the Realtor Relief Fund as a Women’s Council team. Not to mention, we were present when the Red Sox won the World Series, so we were able to witness the celebration in the city.
The meetings were held at the Westin Waterfront, a hotel directly connected with the convention center. This made for easy access for our members to attend the NAR expo and education sessions. Women’s Council also had great presentations which included a panel with our National line officers. They outlined the upcoming year’s strategic plan and gave members insight into positive changes being made for our networks. For example the website is getting revamped and we updated our Mission & Vision statements.

The coming year will also be the first year National will start a Leadership Institute. The first year will be by invitation only.  15 members chosen from across the country will begin the Leadership Institute in Chicago in March, and then classes will coincide with meetings in Washington D.C. And then at National in San Francisco.
We also had breakout sessions over the 4 day conference which were led by
members and guest speakers alike. Topics included: “Advocating for your
Career” presented by Tami Bonnell and “Lead Authentically” and “Identifying Future Leaders” presented by Ginger Downs.
The 5K walk/run was chilly and rainy but our Women’s Council Team showed up and we ended up having the 2nd largest team. Everyone finished the race, and no one got hurt so all in all it was a great success and Realtors raised over $100,000!

The installation had a great turnout and a good time was had by all. California represented well and the room was filled with many well wishers and dignitaries. The CA leadership team was asked to present to the audience a speech of congratulations to Heather, unfortunately our President Cheryl Keller missed the event due to a broken ankle. President-Elect Fiona stepped in and did a great job. We waved our CA flags proudly.  Heather’s presentation was cutting edge and was filled
with positive energy.

The food was great and the gifts to attendees were blue and yellow polka dot scarves for the women and the gift for the men was same colored ties.  There was an after party which included champagne and wine and a live three piece band. The members danced the night away.

The conference, installation and visit to one of America’s finest cities were all wonderful. As usual we spent time networking with our CA peers, and other members from across the country, the relationships you forge at these meetings are priceless. The networking and referrals that result from it all are just a bonus.
See you all soon in Indian Wells for another great meeting and our CA leadership team installation.
Rosanna

February 2018 Message

February 20, 2018 by Women's Council California Leave a Comment

It my honor and a privilege to serve as president of the Women’s Council of REALTORS, California.  The council has filled my career with purpose and passion for the Real Estate industry.

Our state team is strong and focused and consists of line officers, governors, district vice presidents, leadership development chairs and our local network Presidents.  We are positioned to fully support the mission and vision of the Council.  Our goals are very strategic to strengthen each of our networks through member value.  Our California membership numbers are increasing, and our State currently has interest from 6 areas that would like to form a new network.  We are very excited about the future and if you are not a member or Strategic Partner, please join us today!

Together we can move California forward through our positive impact and the ripple effect of mentorship and education. This is our moment.  If you are a member we are looking to you as a future leader!

Leaders we are looking to you to empower, grow and support.

To really lead is to grow more leaders–and to shine a light on people’s gifts and talents.

Together we are strong, together Leaders are Made Here, together we can change the world!

I am truly looking forward to serving you the members in 2018, and I’m so honored to be your President!

2018 State President – Cheryl Keller

Fraud and Phishers on the Rise, PLEASE READ.

February 5, 2018 by Women's Council California Leave a Comment

Important message from:

Fiona Theseira

2018 President-Elect

Fraudulent Emails and attachments

Fraud is on the increase.  There have been so many emails that we have seen in Women’s Council over the last few years.  How can we stop it?  It is my belief that unfortunately we cannot.

What can we do then?  We can educate ourselves.   Know what we are looking for in emails. Know what not to open or left click.  Knowing, just like the IRS, that Microsoft does not call you to let you know you have a problem with your computer. All of these can help.

Firstly, here is the link that the National Women’s Council recently sent out regarding a recent phishing scam that included an attachment http://www.wcr.org/about-us/econnect-newsletter/2016/september/scams/.  This article has some great information.  Please share it with your team.

Here is a recent email that our very own 2018 Treasurer received supposedly from President Cheryl just a couple of days ago…

I have highlighted just a couple of things for you to watch for.  The “from” email address is the first thing to look for, in your business, in personal and in Women’s Council emails.  Always cross reference to verify that the email address is really the one that the email is supposedly from.  Secondly, if in doubt, call or forward the email (without clicking on any attachments) to your president or the person who supposedly sent it to you to verify if they did indeed send it.

I personally received an email last week, supposedly from National Women’s Council, where the “from” made no sense to me and I forwarded the email to National without opening the attachment or “click here” instruction and asked if it was from them.  The response I received was almost immediate, that indeed no it was not from them and they sent the link that we have included in this article.

Here’s to keeping us all safe from these phishers! Fiona

Karen’s Closing Remarks

December 10, 2017 by Women's Council California Leave a Comment

Karen Benefield South Orange County Network

2017 President’s Closing Remarks

We had a bit of a hill to climb in terms of our membership, but we were determined to overcome it. We increased our membership numbers by almost doubling them this year and our goal for 2018 is to do that again. When we achieve this it will qualify us as a Mega Network which I believe we can be.

We have a great team of officers in place for 2018 and we have great members. Together we will achieve this goal.

Women’s Council is an organization that is truly a leader in terms building leaders. Eileen mentioned some of the stats earlier.

I’ve been a member for 7 years now and I’ve watched people like those introduced earlier and many others across the state and the country grow and move on into higher leadership positions.

You might be thinking you wouldn’t want to be up here like I am right now and trust me I was right there with you and I’m still not totally comfortable up here. What I’ve learned is that Women’s Council has a way of building leaders sometimes without you even realizing it’s happening to you. The task is to ask and that’s what they do. They ask you to do something, then something else, then something else, and each time you grow a little more. Before you know it you’ve evolved into a leader and you’re up here saying, 7 years ago when I joined this network there was no way I would have believed you if you told me I would be here today!

I encourage you to consider becoming a member or a strategic partner and learn more about Women’s Council. If you want to align yourself or your company with leaders in our industry then aligning yourself or your company with Women’s Council is a smart decision.

You don’t have to aspire to move up into CAR, NAR, or political positions to benefit from Women’s Council. If you want to grow your own real estate business then you’re already a leader of your own business and you will benefit from being a member of Women’s Council.

However, let me clarify something in order to benefit you can’t just become a member and expect referrals and leadership growth to rain down upon you. You have to become an engaged member, you need to get involved on a project team or become a board member then you’ll see the growth and opportunity. We would love to have you join us!

I have a much different feeling going into 2018 than I did going into 2017. We had a great team in 2017 and we have another great team for 2018. We’re building a legacy and have big goals to achieve this year. We have our calendar on the back of the program and Tim Hayden our 2018 Program Director is going to talk for a few minutes about that, but before that I have one more person to thank.

Thank you again for coming today!

Karen Benefield

South Orange County President
